Good Things Come In Small Packages...!!

BERLIN — - Equine dentist Joe Wysocki got the call when Thumbelina, the world's smallest horse and touring celebrity, blew into Connecticut in her special RV and needed a checkup.

The retired New Britain firefighter, who started his business a few years ago after studying at the Academy of Equine Dentistry in Idaho, made a house call Tuesday morning to the Farmington driveway where the horse's two handlers — former Midwestern rock circuit managers — had parked the Thumbymobile.

It's a big RV, complete with a small stall, used to drive the 17.5-inch, 59-pound Thumbelina from her Missouri farm to appearances across the country at pediatric cancer units, burn centers, treatment centers and the occasional mall, museum or private party.

Ramona Dimatteo, the homeowner whose cousin used to help drive the Thumbymobile, welcomed the rig in her family's driveway after the horse's May 19 gig visiting children at the Klingberg Family Center in nearby New Britain.

A night at a suburban house was a welcome break for horse and crew, who travel harder than most headline rock bands. In May alone, Thumbelina has 26 gigs in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Michigan. Then there's the media, including TV stations from Japan and newspapers from China.

Most nights, the Thumbymobile is at an RV camp or parked at a Wal-Mart — a business that handler Mike Goessling says is "RV-friendly" and pretty safe because of parking lot security cameras.

When Goessling told Dimatteo that 7-year-old Thumbelina needed a routine dental check, she recommended Wysocki, the Berlin-based dentist she uses for her own quarter horse.

"Fate sent Joe to me," she said as Wysocki got down to business with the dwarf miniature, certified by Guinness World Records two years ago as the world's smallest horse.

Wysocki used a small scrub brush to wash Thumbelina's mouth with an antibiotic solution before he began filing down points and other dental irregularities that hindered the horse's ability to properly chew her food.

"There's not a lot of room to work inside its mouth," said Wysocki, one of a handful of equine dentists in Connecticut. "I'm using tools made for regular miniature horses, but even these are a little big."

He'd file for a bit, then wait as the quiet, but obviously nervous, Thumbelina regained her composure, hiding behind her plastic "dogloo" inside the stall section of the RV.

"She sleeps in her dog house," said Goessling, a former St. Louis rock club owner who gave up that life two years ago to bring Thumbelina from his parent's farm to the 200 or so appearances she has yearly. "She's only half the size of the regular miniature horses we raise on our farm. She's a dwarf miniature. The people at the American Museum of Natural History in New York say she's the smallest adult horse to walk on earth in 55 million years since Eohippus."

Thumbelina is a lot easier to tour with than rock musicians, said Goessling's helper and longtime friend, Will Porter, who's out for the latest three-week leg of Thumbelina's 2008 U.S. tour.

"This is much easier," Porter said. "Still, I never thought it would be him and me, touring with the world's smallest horse."

Unruly fans — almost always adults — are about the only problem they encounter on the road these days. The ill-mannered grandparents who rushed Thumbelina's pen during an appearance outside the American Museum in New York City last weekend were, in Porter's words, "just about the worst display of adults I've seen. I was just amazed by it."

A few feet away, Wysocki resumed gently filing down Thumbelina's molars to balance her bite.

"I've been around horses all my life," he said. "Right now, I have a big mule and a Tennessee walker."

As he neared the end of a 32-year career in the fire department, Wysocki said he wanted to do something different after years of rushing to fires and accidents and seeing many dismal situations. He decided to work with horses.

"I knew how important it is for horses to have good dental care," he said. "If their bite is off, they can't chew and digest their food. Horses get gingivitis and periodontal disease, just like people. I've seen the results. A horse spits out its food and drops grain. You help fix that, and a horse that couldn't eat will put 150 pounds back on."

Good mornin', y'all!

I went back to the front porch and read...it was an excellent post, Lynne!!! You hope they'd do right by their horse but most are in it for the $$$ and of course, the Triple Crown brings alotsa more $$$$.

EH ~ If Big Brown's 'bad' feet are passed down in the bloodline, will breeders want to breed their mares to him even if he were a Triple Crown winner??

Good Earthly Morning Famblee!!!!

Hope all have a wonderful Earthly day today!!!

Linda~The problem with breeding Big Brown is that they can neither confirm nor deny whether his brittle hooves is genetic. His very first race was on the turf and I read somewhere that the reason for this was because he had brittle hooves. Now, I'm not a trainer, but I cannot see him developing this condition from early workout sessions as a two-year-old. Mare owners should be conscious when choosing Big Brown as a mate, for this condition, in MY opinion seems to be genetic, since his latest plague of quarter-cracks are starting at the coronary band, rather than at the thin lining of the circumference of the hoof at the bottom (where track surface damage would come into play)

Hello, Famblee

I love the picture.

Angel Lynne, I'll have to go and read your post on the front porch. I'm in such a habit just to read the folders in ABR Discussion and Chat that I forget to read the front porch.

If God willing the worst doesn't happen to BB in the Belmont, it sounds like he is heading towards laminitis at some point!

Hi, Famblee, here I am!

Yesterday, had to take elder sister to the doctor at the big, busy hospital, it took 9 hours, round trip!!! Ridiculous! Didn't get home until last night and then realized I had an early morning doctor appt that I had scheduled a long time ago...so I've been out of the loop the last couple of days!

EH, that was very interesting about BB hooves...I assumed they were genetic, but I'm sure they'll try to sell is as otherwise, cuz, like Linda said, it's the $$$$...Angel Nat, laminitis, that worries me, too, it just seems like his feet are so fragile, like there is such a delicate balance. It'll be interesting to see if there is any hesitation from some mare owners to breed to him....

And that picture from Guiding Light is soooo precious, it made me tear up! How cute is that!!!???

Me again:)

I have sent an e-mail to: webmaster@nyrainc.com, in regards to Big Brown, the Triple Crown Race, BB's quarter crack and his trainers' 'routine' use of pain killers/anti-inflammatory drugs all being made so 'public'...pointing out to them that horseracing is a sport they are trying to build/maintain a fan base for. Pointing out that the whole world will be watching next Saturday....and pointing out that as important as that is, perhaps most importantly, God will be watching, as well!

It was suggested on the 'front porch' that 'real' Vets be in those stalls giving those horses a very thorough 'once over'...I requested that licensed Equine Veterinarians be there..and in BB's case, a hoof specialist...:/ Oh, I imagine my e-mail will be deleted as quickly and efficiently as possible...but I also know mine will not be the only one heading their way....Alex has posted an article this morning, which I haven't yet read...the vet is quoted as saying BB's healing is at a 7-8 today...my goodness, that sounds to be to be pretty 'miraculous' as hoof healing goes...especially since y'day, an article stated BB is a 'slow healer'!

Someone on the front porch hit the nail on the head when she wrote if anything happens to this horse while on this Triple Crown track, all HELL will break loose..I feel it to be an understatement....she is right, it could very well be racing's demise.
Lynne
2008-05-30 14:22:04 GMT
Author:Anonymous
Lynne, I saw that on the front porch today, too..I find healing to be accomplished that quickly quite miraculous, too...I liked the idea some said of an independent vet axamining BB, but I had two questions that came up in my pea brain maybe EH can help us with..first, do vets at the track check all horses before a race and is it pretty much a quick once over? And is it just before the race? And secondly, does a vet ever overrule a trainer/owner and tell them a horse can't run? I would imagine that would cause all sorts of angst...
--Sue
2008-05-30 14:40:02 GMT
Author:Anonymous
I realize I should have included the words, 'not vested in racing' when I suggested 'real' Vets...that would be of some importance, I should imagine...and then it made me think....IF something happens to BB, I'd sure like to have the names of the Vet/s who examined that horse and said he is fine to race..I wonder, have any of them ever been been 'brought up' for saying horses were o.k., and then they broke down..or are they 'protected brothers':/

There is just so much in horesracing today, which needs a good 'cleaning'! If a National Committee could ever be put into place, I imagine that 'cleaning' would be swift and mighty bigggggggg.....but there would have to be members NOT 'vested' in horseracing...do I think any of this will happen in my own lifetime..nope:(

Good Earthly Morning and Mead and Greet Friday Famblee!!!!

From what I understand, a track vet examines each horse before each race to make sure the horses are sound enough to race that day, and after the race, they are checked again for misuse of medication. The owner almost NEVER makes the call as to whether the horse will race or not. Dutrow will look for heat in Big Brown's hooves and legs, they'll look at his over-all demeanour and hopefully do some x-rays on all four lower-legs to ensure they don't see any issues. They'll look at his soles to ensure there are no abscesses, and they'll probably fit him with a new set of glue-on shoes for the Belmont. I'm not 100% sure if they will indeed be glue-ons, but they'll probably shoe him again before the race. One thing I'm not sure about, is if they'll give him a blow-out workout the morning of the Belmont, as they did in the Preakness. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that because the Industry is not governed by ONE sanctioned body, the intensity of the vet checks can differ from track to track, but in Big Brown's case, you can guarantee that ALL eyes will be on his safeness and well-being. All race horses deserve the same type of treatment before running in a race....not just potential Triple Crown winners......:)

EH...'after the race the horse is checked for misuse of medication'....AFTER the race...so, if there is 'misuse' found, then does that change the outcome of the race? The trainers all know this, so by 'misuse' I assume that might mean a 'certain level' of a med is 'acceptable' in the bloodstream? And, I cannot help wonder, if that 'acceptable' level might be considered too high by others?

And YES...I agree, ALL horses deserve the same careful examination and 'okay' to race..NOT just the 'biggees'..bless their horsey hearts, it is the LEAST which could be done to protect them as much as possible!

Good Afternoon, Famblee

EH, is the track vet an employee of Belmont or of the NTRA? Shouldn't there be an independent vet? Belmont and the NTRA all want the Belmont Stakes to go on with Big Brown. They want the television coverage and the betting money.

I was trying to find that ABR folder about the upcoming Congressional hearing. I think those legislators should just go to Belmont Park with a few independent vets and observe BB.

Nat

Lynne~yes, after the race they are checked for misuse of meds, and I'm not sure if the ones that came in fourth and behind are checked, sometimes they may be randomly, but I'm pretty sure, win, place and show-ers are checked. If misuse is found according to that State's guidelines, then yes, the horse would be disqualified and the trainer would be suspended I think, not sure.

Nat~Not sure who moderates that area as far as vets, but I agree with you when you say that an individual, who has nothing to gain or lose in the outcome of the race, should be examining him. I'm not saying that Dutrow is paying a vet to turn his head if there is anything wrong, but I would think that a second or third opinion is necessary in this case.

Good Morning, Hevvinly Famblee:)

Yessss...once again, up at 4:30:/ What is UP with me being UP so early?! Too many things on my mind...from Frens to horses, me thinks!

A very dear Fren 'o mine lost her husband four years ago today...he was a Deputy Sheriff responding w/lights/siren to a light plane crash and was 'interruped' by a driver pulling into his lane from a stop sign.....David avoided hitting the vehicle, insodoing, he ended up across the road, smasing into an Oak tree and was killed...all this no more than 1/4 mile from his home...where his wife and two or three of his children were wondering what all the sirens and helicopter were for.

And, then there is/are the horses...and the Belmont only one week away....so, Famblee, I am 'up' and trying to be 'attem' quite early this day!

I have a 'list' of 'to-do's' written...Murphy has been o'side...and am trying really HARD to keep from posting on the front porch and thus fitting myself for an orange jump suit:/

Morning, Famblee!

Amgel Nat, it's so weird, Percherons are born dark brown or black and as they get older, they turn dapply gray and white and then, most of the time, turn all gray (white) like mom! It's weird to look at June and think she was black when she was born, but she was! Dad is still dark because of his age, he is still young...:))

Lynne, so sorry for your fren's anniversary..

Good mornin', y'all!!

((((Nashoba's Key))))

If Big Brown is pulled from the Belmont, I'll feel badly for the winner. Those that believed that BB should have run will say that the one who did win is 'second rate' or whatever. It's an honor to WIN the BELMONT and that will be somewhat tarnished by all the crap that's gone on with BB:(

Yippee skippee, a brand spankin' new Percheron foal!! It makes my heart sing in gladness:) Kisses to that liddle sweetie.

SKUA:) You did a bang-up job in your write up yesterday (Friday)!! You don't have to bash Dick, he does a damn good job of doing that to HIMSELF!!LOL!!! Thank you for keeping us abreast of what goes on in the news other than what our own town papers print ~ which down here in this hole, is NOTHING! I appreciate you!

Another wedding tonight and will try the lime shoes again. Somehow I ended up with 7...a half size bigger than I actually wear and was kinda walking out of them as we trudged across the meadow to the cypress pond....and yes, mama, I DID 'walk with them on in the store' when I tried them on to SEE if they slipped!!LOL!! Of course, I did have to buy a new pair of black peep toe ones this week to use as my back up! Hey, I'm a girly girl!

Lynne ~ Do you look good in orange?

Have fun campin', y'all!

Hello, again, Famblee

I realized this morning how anxious the Belmont Stakes and BB connections are making me.

Angel Lynne, I'm sorry, too, for your fren's annivesary. How horrible, to wonder what the sirens are for and then go out and see it's about you.

I'm headed off to the Big City this afternoon. Going to see a ballet. Not that I really know the movements, it's just pretty to look at and I like Lincoln Center.

Hello, Angels

I had a very pleasant day in the Big Apple.

I passed the carriage horses along Central Park South on my way to Lincoln Center. They are really big. Tall and barrel bodied. I suppose they need to be, since they pull carriages with human beings in them. They stood so still. It had been raining, but the rain was tapering off. A painted one looked like a statue. I peered in at him just to make sure he was real. A few were eating grain out of buckets.

There is a ticker tape in Times Square. As I was walking down Seventh Avenue, I looked up and saw, "Big Brown gets new sutures. On track for the Belmont."

Good Night, Angels

I might have a hard time sleeping tonight. My two year old cat, Dollie, was poking around these paper bags she likes to jump in when I saw something crawl behind it. I don't know if it was a big bug or a tiny mouse. I had the window screens down all over today.

Good mornin', y'all!

Out by the pool Saturday afternoon with my daughter and saw something swimming in the water. At first I thought it might be a frog or toad but the swimming motion wasn't the same plus, the closer I got to that side of the pool, the more I could see a tail. It ended up being a liddle mouse....now I know where the saying 'looked like a drowned rat' came from! He was just too small and helpless looking for me to do anything other than scoop it out with the net and set it close to the pool house porch so it could scamper under it to safety.

Went to see the Sex in the City movie yesterday! That's as close as I'll come to NYC, Nat, so I envy you being able to just go in for the day:) Do the carriage horses look well fed??

Yippee, it's JUNE! I'm now on a countdown to my trip to Michigan:) My nephew gets married on the 14th and my hubby and I are going to make a quick 5 day trip to attend and then go to Mackinaw Island and the Soo Locks. We leave on the 11th!!

Oh, Angel Nat, I hope it was a big bug....I have a serious phobia about the "m" word and can hardly even think about it...won't Dolly take care of it for you? We have these big bugs out now that I think are June Bugs??

Linda, Mackinaw Island, you lucky gal, I have always wanted to go there! Of course, you know how they only have horses and no cars on the island...a dream come true! Our draft guy who used to work at our barn retired and moved there and drives a carriage in the summer just to keep busy, what a cool retirement!

Our liddle baby Percheron has been named Ike...he was out with mama yesterday, trotting alongside her in the paddock, it was sooo cute! He sticks to her like glue and just wanted to keep up!

I like Ike!

That thing might have been been a centipede. Last night when I went to turn off the kitchen light I saw Dollie poking around the back door. There is a tiny opening where the screen door fits the jamb. Of course the wooden door was shut at that hour, but perhaps Dollie had happy memories of seeing something creep through that little opening during the day while the wooden door was open. This morning I killed a centipede in the kitchen sink.

The Central Park carriage horses do look well fed. They are barrel bodied and have big hooves.

The Olympics is a big thang around here! I think it would be cool to have the Olympics here, but then I am a suburbanite who wouldn't have traffic lined up in front of my house :))but I still think it would be an opportunity of a lifetime. EH, that was a great article, thanks! Boy, I was wayyyy off on that one! I even thought the name had to have some reference to its lineage, or start with the same letter or something like that? Maybe that's when the horse is registered? For example, one horse who visits our barn is a grandson of Riva Ridge and his name is Laser Ridge (a very sweet guy, by the way)but we just call him Laser.....Maybe it's just a matter of decorum...I always thought Charismatic and Unbridled were really cool names....What names have you angels liked? Like when I was naming the foals, I went with Virtuous Secret because it had both part of Gallant Secret's name and then a part of her bloodline...from her mama's side:) My pea brain has gone dead and I can't think of ONE of my favorite names but I do know I have some!!! How aggravating.

Good Day, Angels

There was a time when I rooted for horses based on their names!

Imawildandcrazyguy still strikes a cord with me. I'll have to think of the others that struck a cord. Actually, I do like Seattle Slew.
